The spoils of war

Last weekend was the Holy Oly Revival Relocated. The weather was nice, Summit West was hoppin, and the park crew somehow managed to erect a 28ft quarter pipe. After waking up around 8AM on my friend’s couch next to a bucket of barf from the night before, I made my way up to hill. Upon my arrival I noticed all the heavy hitters were in attendance, the fans were cheering, Jesse Burtner was talking, and I frantically searched the hill for a bottle of water to rid my hangover.

The rail kids were loving the mervin Celica, doing all kinds of crazy rail trickies and what not. But all the attention that day was focused on the quarterpipe and those psycho enough to hit it. Many pros, and up and comers were charging. But it was the old guard who stepped up and gave everyone a show. Peter Line came screaming down the run in, straight lining it (no pun intended) from the gate, going HUGE as always. Kurt Jenson, with style and grace, wowed all, especially the ladies, with his oh so sweet methods. He was later awarded the best Method Award. (Now dubbed the Kurt Jenson Award)

But the man of the hour, the Holiest of the Holy, utilizing everything he learned at cheer camp, was the one and only Monty Hays. Every time he hit the quarterpipe the crowd watched in awe as he went for all or nothing (usually coming away with the all) He went bigger than everyone else, and crashed harder than everyone else, by paying the ultimate price, he won the ultimate award. This year’s 2009 Holy Oly Winner: Monty Hays.
