Transmission from Commander Sullivan reporting findings from the Southwest Quadrant of the Golden State_winter 2010:
Some might say that southern california is the heart of Babylon, representing the crowds and the vanity factory. But every dog pound has its days , and so cal is no exception . Its a common theme that some people move there to be on permanent vacation. Its the place where weathermen have one of the highest success rates in the country, “tomorrow will be sunny and mild.” 95 percent of the time they’re right. Lucky for them though they are more actors than meteorologists, so looking good on TV is what its all about.
Weather lovers are bored into apathy until a year like this one comes along. EL Nino delivers a dose of atmospheric reality and for a few months it relentlessly sends storm after storm slamming into the coast. Winds rape old roofs, antiquated sewers swell from rain. tampons and used condoms get flushed into the ocean from maxed out drains and rivers and the surf gets HUGE and Consistent. Surfers revel in the neo-mordial soup and develop new and more powerful immune systems to battle the incessant deluge. The weak fall early with some picking up their golf clubs and snowboards as they retreat from the ocean until the sunnier climes return . The rest reap the rewards and fill their mental gas tanks with waves that they will remember well into their 70’s….. depending on how much weed they’ve smoked.
I tend to get restless when shit like this happens with the weather. Its been a fortunate disease of mine since i was a little piss ant. If there is a hurricane, blizzard or giant groundswell coming than i am like a fruit fly on a rotting apricot, a frat boy at a keg party, a redneck at a Walmart sale. I cant stay away. Its one of my endearing qualities that tests all my relationships, personal or indentured. The baby boy, el nino, was calling me. I saw the weather maps stacking up lows all the way to Japan for what looked to be weeks. Mother nature was fornicating relentlessly with father time and as her giant booty rocked the waters, his seeds were planted and the womb that was the ocean came to life . My mind was playing a character in a Guy Ritchie film , with a wham , bam , slam edit that had me on a plane and feasting on a greasy chile relleno burrito before you could say Paris Hilton. I stole/ borrowed a 1972 white Jaguar from my unknowing friend Pat Millin , who was on a remote surf trip as the guest /boy-toy of some sugar mama to the Island of Tavarua in the south Pacific. I assumed he wouldn’t mind that i was driving his vintage bourgeois bond mobile while he was getting balls deep pitted in more ways that one on some remote tropical island. The trip sent me off in a quest to begin filming of a new movie project that i had been developing with a cast of hooligans and fellow Spacecraft Cosmonauts , Eric Brandt and Wolfgang Nyvelt , Richard Kenvin , Ryan Burch and Cyrus Sutton , all rich in the knowledge , and artistry of sideways sliding be it on water, or land.
Its not often that i get to escape from the snowier climates in mid winter to go on a surf shooting mission so this was a welcome change. Over the next 2 weeks i probably pissed in my wetsuit at least 30 times as i swam for hours with the pelicans and seals, sunken up to my neck with only a head and a waterproof camera housing visible to the seekers on the beach . What’s that piece of garbage floating out there they would wonder when they’d see me. I might be trashy , but i am not garbage, though definitely a scumbag at times.
In the period of the 2 weeks i was there the surf never went below head high and was often in the way overhead range. Surfers are riding some crazy shit nowadays as far as boards go . Pieces of wood with no fins and barely 3/4 of an inch thick . Foam blanks cut in half with no glassing and minimal shaping. People are looking into the past to design the future. 200 year old pasts in some cases. Some of the kids will make one in 4 minutes out of the raw foam then proceed to show anyone watching that now, in the year 2010 there are no limits as to what we can ride. There is no one right way , there are many. there is no reason why you cant make some crazy vehicle of your own. even if it is a complete failure. Start again , make a better one. Screw the rules, these art forms that some like to call sports exist mainly because the people that started them were trying to get away from the rules that came with organized sports. Now in some ways corporate america has gotten involved and tried to homogenize what we ride so they can maximize production and profits. Ride whatever you want. Who cares? Thats what is going on out there now. And the cool thing is that its not just happening in the water but in the snow as well. binding-less, fishy, banana-like snow skates, swallowtails. I reckon its probably a theme thats happening in different walks of life all over the world. Things are different now. they keep telling us the world is about to end , so we may as well try as much cool shit as we can before we all go to hell.

I have taken a much more profound interest in interior spaces and how people, especially creative people choose to express themselves within their living and work spaces. So I was pretty excited to stumble upon The Selby where you can take a peek at the work and living spaces of people like Philippe Starck (whom I love), Karl Lagerfeld and Stephen Powers aka ESPO (whom you can see in the image above).
Two titans of the street art world collide when DOLK and M-CITY invade
Brooklynite Gallery for what is sure to be a show for the ages.
Reclusive, Norwegian stencil artist DOLK, emerges from the shadows to
showcase a new collection of cutting imagery. Often monochromatic with
one precisely placed color, DOLK crafts strangely beautiful story-lines
into his work, infusing a wry sense of humor into such wide ranging
topics as celebrity, religion and societal pressures. As a whole, DOLK’s
new body of work conveys a bit more cynicism than the past, with
most figures displaying enigmatic expressions as well as the inclusion
of one key prop that at times will leave you scratching your head.
However, what does remain consistent within the history of DOLK’s work
is the intrigue he manages to garner with simple, clean black lines and
spot-on subjects.
Look closely at a satellite picture of the earth and you just might see
an M-CITY mural. Listen to the echoing sounds of metal forging, pistons
firing, and air compression as M-CITY, Poland’s most prolific artist
working in the public space, erects yet another large scale mural on any
number of continents. Using his graphic brand of stencil artillery that
includes images of smoke-stack factories, cogs and gears, steam ships,
and repetitive city blocks, M-CITY redefines the Industrial Revolution.
That same crushing imagery is transferred seamlessly to his deliberate,
grey-scale canvases which could easily be passed off as Cold War
propaganda.
Thank heavens half the space at Brooklynite Gallery is outdoors —quite
conducive for these two addicts of outdoor activity who also plan on leaving
many gifts to the people of NYC.

“Sun Boxes are twenty speakers operating independently each powered by solar panels. There is a different guitar sample in each box all playing together making the composition. The guitar samples are all of different lengths so the whole piece keeps evolving.
Participants are encouraged to walk amongst the speakers. It sounds different inside of the array. There is a different sense of space inside. Certain speakers will be closer and louder therefore the piece will sound different to different people in different positions throughout the array. Creating a unique experience for everyone.
There are no batteries involved. The Sun Boxes are reliant on the sun. When the sun sets the music stops. The piece changes as the length of the day changes. Making the participants aware of the cycle of the day.”
