Dewa and Devi Get Married in Bali

Filed under: Community, Culture, Events, News — Sally @ 1:53 pm

We recently received some photos of our Bali production manager Dewa’s beautiful wedding in Bali.
wedding-in-sulawesi-216

Dewa gave me a few insights into the ceremony, which took place in December at Dewa’s parents’ house.

As the usual the Balinese person gets married (pawiwahan or nganten) it must be done the ‘proper way’ which means in front of the whole village. If a man is living in his own place it will be at his house, if not at the home of his parents, the new wife moving in immediately. When people get married in Bali, the man takes responsibility as a member of society. He gets the right to speak at a Banjar (the community body) meeting and must take on social duties, such as attending the temple ceremonies and taking part in the community activities. In this way other members of the Banjar will come to recognize him as an adult and he will have the opportunity to take on more responsibility in the Banjar.

Dewa says, "Both the bride and groom dress in bright 'songket', with brocades of gold thread, and the woman's hair is decorated with glittering gold flowers."

Hindu wedding ceremonies are rich in tradition; between elaborate entertainment (with storytellers!) ritual and food, it sounds like magic. Dewa provided me with a few highlights:

- The wedding ceremony begins with a Memadik process, where the groom’s family meet with the bride’s family to ask the bride if she wants to marry the groom. If the answer is yes, the bride will go with the groom to his family’s house.

- The groom’s family arranges and pays for the wedding; the date set well in advance on a propitious day. Wedding guests are often entertained by professional storytellers and musicians. Enormously detailed rules govern dining and seating arrangements.

- Usually the bride and groom offer food to one another, then simulate such domestic duties such as washing, cooking rice, and cutting bamboo. Prayers are intoned, and then the couple eats together in public, feeding each other. This is an important symbolic act, as in former times only married men and women were allowed to eat food together in public. The priest then performs a ritual purification and blesses the couple.

- With the wedding process in Bali, both families will unite, not simply the bride and groom… This is why there is always many people attending a ceremony.

Devi takes part in the family business in Bali that makes our magic hand-knitted hats, making her an important part of the Spacecraft. Congratulations to Dewa and Devi for making it happen.

Kicking Cancer in the Balls

Filed under: Community, Events, Save the World — Sally @ 2:56 pm

Templeton at The Skateboard Mag put up a post yesterday about Chicago skater David Thomas, who was dropped from his insurance company after finding out he has testicular cancer.

The good news is, he has a lot of awesome friends who are doing a ton of fundraising to help cover his medical bills. You can help out The Nicest Man in Chicago online, or if you’re in the Chicago area you can head over to the Empty Bottle on Wednesday the 21st for a pretty kickin’ fundraising party:

There’s also going to be a raffle and auction for some “sick merch”–should be pretty sick, and it’s for a good cause.

Spacecraft : Stevens Pass : Retro Fools Day

Filed under: Astronauts, Bunny, Community, Culture, Events, Uncategorized — Ryan @ 11:10 am

An April dump of snow in the Cascades, one piece suits and stepping back into the rad… Check out the first annual Stevens Pass Retro Fools Day slalom race and as seen by Spacecraft’s Ryan and the Rabbit.

Retro Fool Day

Retro Fool Day

A late season dump produces an amazing day at Stevens Pass on April 2nd. The crew set gates for the first annual Retro Fools Day downhill slalom race. About 100 stoked snow enjoyers showed up at the top of Hogs Back and strapped into their old set-ups. The day was a classic in the making with neon glowing gear and a pretty good assortment of snow toys that represented the evolution of 20+ years of snow shredding design. A slalom course with breakaway gates was the set-up to test your skills and shoot for the fastest time. The snow fell all day and the beer went just the same. Powder, friends and fun was Retro Fools Day… and you know that Spacecraft will be back at Stevens Pass next year… come on out and race the Rabbit on your classic equipment.

Spacecraft Astronaut Sky Siljeg returns from the Florida Bowl Riders

Filed under: Astronauts, Events — Ryan @ 1:53 pm

This morning we got this email from Spacecraft Astronaut Sky Siljeg:

Hi, just wanted to check in and let you know that I’m home again from Florida Bowl Riders this past weekend. Day one at a secret back yard bowl was super fun. Sunny out and really an amazing session.
Didn’t quite skate up to where I wanted to and took a 12th. I guess scores were super tight so over all I didn’t place too far out of 1st really score-wise, just lots of amazing skaters.

Day two at Kona. Looked like it was going to get rained out. I even went to the local movies to pass the time. Got the text that it was clearing up and they were drying the bowl. Left the show early and booked it for the bowl. Some serious skating always goes down at Kona. I love that bowl. Took 6th and felt like I really put out a good show. You would not believe the level bowl skating has come to. Getting into the top ten is really taking a lot. I placed 8th in the overall scores.

I feel lucky to get to even be in the bowl with some of these guys. Thank you for your support in getting me here.

After I came home I spoke at a celebration dinner for “Invest in Youth” for the YMCA. [It] was held in a huge, very full banquet room at the Everett Convention Center. [It] was all the heads of the Ymca, trustees, committee heads, etc. My talk was basically my story and what skating is to me. They put up a pretty cool picture that my mom shot at Kona. [It] was pretty cool to get a standing ovation from that group. My hope is to get more funds for programs at Mukilteo Skate Park and hopefully a roof over it at some point in the next year. I think they see what is possible through skating.

Sky attached some great pictures, too.

Spacecraft to attend prestigious Snow Skate event : March 20th at Silver Fir | High Noon

Filed under: Bunny, Community, Culture, Events — Ryan @ 1:20 pm

We at Spacecraft like to snow skate from time to time. I think snow skating has still to reach its prime… many vision a lunch tray with grip tape and a little rail set up… back yard stuff for kids, right?… I guess it depends on how you look at it and what level you want to take it to.

I personally like the by-decks and being able to RIDE the mountain… The dudes that put on the Serpentine Massacre are of similar thought. These guys are pushing an underground movement that is likely to smear any stereotypes of snowskaters

Riding the whole mountain on conditions that allow it can rejuvenate your love for the mountain and even act as a way to feel like a kid again… or it’s just another excuse to drink beer and get ideas for bad tattoos. Only you can decide, so, before you stereotype this “un-sport” as a novelty act, check out people who really RIDE snowskates. Your jaw will drop and you’ll become a groupie.

Retro Fools Day 2010!

Filed under: Events, Uncategorized — Ryan @ 4:00 pm

Posted by Sally.

Friday, April 2nd is Retro Fools Day at Stevens Pass, an event celebrating vintage boards and rad, retro gear. The older and cooler your stuff, the more time deductions you get off your runs. They’re giving out rewards for best time, best outfit, most radical, and more. A $5 suggested donation (or nothing at all) gets you into the downhill slalom race.

Retro Fools Day 2010

So you can plan your trip to Value Village/Goodwill/your grandparents’ garage, here’s some time deduction samples from the Stevens Pass website (although these aren’t set in stone):

Retro jacket: -1 sec
Retro pants: -1sec
One piece: -3sec
Pre 1995 board: -1sec
Pre 1995 skis: -1sec
Old boots: -3 sec
Monoski: -7sec
Post 1995 board: +4sec
Post 1995 ski: +4sec

I can only imagine what kind of time deduction you’d get for some legit 70’s or 80’s gear.

Deluxx Fluxx Might Be the Best Arcade Ever

Filed under: Art, Events — Ryan @ 4:00 pm

Posted by Sally.

Brooklyn-based artist collectives Faile and Bast have put together one of the coolest gallery shows I have ever seen–a day-glo arcade dubbed Deluxx Fluxx at Lazarides Gallery in London. It’s kind of like a normal arcade, if a normal arcade was one gigantic, black light-reactive collage. In addition to decking out old 80’s consoles, Faile and Bast plugged in original games (really, more like amazing art installations) with buddies Adapted and the Studio for Interactive Media. They even painted a Foosball table! Babelgum has this video, and Vimeo user Rockwell Kills has this one:

If you find yourself in London within the next week or so, the show runs until March 27th (although some sources say it ends today. Oh well).

The Spacecraft Rabbit checks out the Ride Shakedown at Snoqualmie

Filed under: Astronauts, Bunny, Community, Culture, Events, News, Uncategorized — Ryan @ 10:21 am

The Shakedown was a grassroots event that was started in the far away country of Canada. It has grown in popularity over the years and made its way to Washington’s Summit at Snoqualmie.

We were given an invite to come see some talented snow shredders leap off of a huge snow wedge and then navigate a rail set-up after landing that.

It was a cool scene at the Summit, with a steady crowd to cheer on the snowboard leapers.

Spacecraft stayed low key and lurked around checking out the action from the sidelines.

Congrats to Manuel Diaz and Megan Ginter from your friends at Spacecraft

MARCH 5-11, 2010

Presented by Northwest Film Forum and AIGA-Seattle
Sponsored by CapitolHillSeattle.com

ByDesign explores the intersection of graphic design and moving image, and celebrates multidisciplinary artists who push the boundaries to create new techniques, styles and forms. Over the past decade, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting a great number of special guest artists, and presenting hundreds of new and historic films. We’ve seen new technologies developed, old techniques revived and watched as interest has grown in this overlap of design and film.

The tenth annual ByDesign program features a range of film title sequences, animations, documentary portraits and guest presenters. We are especially pleased to present films by Charles and Ray Eames, as the work of the legendary multi-disciplinary husband and wife team was the main inspiration for our starting this program a decade ago.

Mt. Baker, 62+ inches of powder!

Filed under: Astronauts, Events, Music, Uncategorized — Ryan @ 1:35 pm

For all of you that missed opening day at Baker… oh man, it looked
like a good one.

Astronaut’s John Laing, Jake Blauvelt, Jesse Burtner, Pat McCarthy and
pretty much the entire shred community painted powder turns on 62+ inches
and some even made it to see the Pixies that night. I’ll bet work was Zombie
like the following day, with a dirty little smile to all onlookers.

I was unable to make it but was lucky enough to hear all the details from
the 100+ people I know that did go…

Lucky me… I made it up on Saturday for redemption, and though it was not
opening day, it was Baker with over a 65″ base.
