Spacecraft gets a new office :: April 26th 2010

Filed under: Art, Community, Culture, News — Ryan @ 5:07 pm

That’s right… Spacecraft has moved to a new location. We found ourselves in an opportune position when former Miami Vice star, Don Johnson, aka “Crocket” was evicted from his secret lair on the waterfront in Ballard, Seattle. With a view of the ocean, shag carpet, a spiral stair case and a setting straight out of a 80’s porno set, the new Spacecraft office is a perfect place for us to plot the takeover of what is RAD.

Hit us up if you are in Seattle… we’ll let you take us to lunch at the legendary Paseo Cuban Sandwich shop just a few doors down.

Check the photos:

We Can’t Stop Playing With Hipstamatic

Filed under: Art — Sally @ 1:17 pm

This is the story of the original, plastic Hipstamatic 100, as told by the inventor’s brother on Hipstamatic.com

In the summer of 1984 my two little brothers, Bruce and Winston were struck by a drunk driver at 4:13 PM June 21st on HWY 17 between Merrill and Wausau, WI. That day forever changed my life. I am setting up this website as a way to remember my brothers and the passion they had for art, photography, and their ability to make things happen.

Just two years earlier, Bruce and Winston had been attending Art school part time and had come up with what they thought was a million dollar idea for bringing photographic art to the masses cheaply. In the winter of 1982 they had developed a camera that was made entirely of plastic, including the lens. They molded and manufactured the camera under the name Hipstamatic out of their 650 sq ft river front cabin on the waters of the mighty Wisconsin. We all referred to the molding area as the ‘Animal Room’ because the smell reminded us of burning rubber and roadkill.

The Hipstamatic was born out of a love of the Kodak Instamatic and a desire to make it something even children could afford on a small allowance. My brother Bruce once said, “It doesn’t matter if the photos aren’t prefect — as long as people are capturing memories I will be happy.” At the time I didn’t agree, but now in my fifties I finally understand what he was talking about.

It sounds like we would have loved them.

Unfortunately, under 200 Hipstamatic 100s were made, ever–but after the Hipstamatic’s story got a little bit of a web following, an iPhone app, the Hipstamatic 110, was born, intended to simulate pictures taken from the original Hipstamatic 100. Now, the app has been upgraded to the Hipstamatic 150, and includes a variety of absolutely insane lenses, flashes and films, which you can mix-and-match to your heart’s desire. I took a few pictures around the new Spacecraft office as an example of what this can do:

It also features direct Flickr (camera info will say “Hipstamatic 150,” not “iPhone”) and Facebook uploads.

wheat paste

Filed under: Art — Stefan @ 11:56 am

“I’m exhausted, but i want to get this out. I pasted Red Lake today.

I woke up late this morning, around 10:30 or so. Stumbled out of bed thinking “…no, I’m not up for pasting today afterall.” Around noon I wandered outside for a moment and thought “…Shit! The weather is perfect. It’s warm and there’s very little wind. I’ve got to go paste.” I’d thought I was going to collaborate with someone this weekend, but she pulled a no show (leaving me alone to hang a 14.5 foot piece in 4 parts). On the 30 mile drive over to Red Lake I rethought through hanging this piece alone but hoping all the while I’d be able to find someone at the old trading post to help me.

Once I got there I connected with Lorenzo who runs the place. I learned later that he lives above the trading post. He said he’d run the place since 1991 and thinks the lower part was built in 1891. (Dig that.) I love old trading posts. The inside of this one is totally old school.

Lorenzo was super nice. Upon seeing me, he started cracking jokes and giving me shit for not knowing more Navajo after 23 years. We have a deal going. I’m going to find a hot, young nurse for him at the clinic where I work and in return, he’s going to find for me a hot, young, sheep herder. (This was all his idea.) I’d told him I’d try to get there last weekend to hang this piece. He greeted me today with “….I had four young sheepherders waiting for you last weekend.” I thought “…great. I’ve no idea why I didn’t come last weekend but really wish I had.”

Lorenzo and his three grandsons (by clan), along with the cashier from the trading post, all helped me. And here I thought I’d be installing alone and I ended up having 5 people help me. Gotta love it. I asked Lorenzo to document the process with my camera. These are his photos.
Once we were done, Lorenzo invited me to join them in a sweat. It was a most incredible end to a day when I thought I woundn’t paste. In addition to the teachings from the wise ones and his own life observations, Lorenzo gave me the name “Hosteen James.” He said “…Chip just doesn’t sound right.”blog-p1

You can check out more detailed pictures of the work here.

Magnani makes his prints on photo paper, but adds a protective film afterwards that gives the prints a matte tone. Individual prints are 100×100cm and a limited run of 10 copies; sets of four 40×40cm series prints are limited to 100 copies. I love both of these sets, but if anyone wants to get me The Forgotten Monarchy for my birthday, that’d be swell.

Deluxx Fluxx Might Be the Best Arcade Ever

Filed under: Art, Events — Ryan @ 4:00 pm

Posted by Sally.

Brooklyn-based artist collectives Faile and Bast have put together one of the coolest gallery shows I have ever seen–a day-glo arcade dubbed Deluxx Fluxx at Lazarides Gallery in London. It’s kind of like a normal arcade, if a normal arcade was one gigantic, black light-reactive collage. In addition to decking out old 80’s consoles, Faile and Bast plugged in original games (really, more like amazing art installations) with buddies Adapted and the Studio for Interactive Media. They even painted a Foosball table! Babelgum has this video, and Vimeo user Rockwell Kills has this one:

If you find yourself in London within the next week or so, the show runs until March 27th (although some sources say it ends today. Oh well).

ByDesign10

MARCH 5-11, 2010

Presented by Northwest Film Forum and AIGA-Seattle
Sponsored by CapitolHillSeattle.com

ByDesign explores the intersection of graphic design and moving image, and celebrates multidisciplinary artists who push the boundaries to create new techniques, styles and forms. Over the past decade, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting a great number of special guest artists, and presenting hundreds of new and historic films. We’ve seen new technologies developed, old techniques revived and watched as interest has grown in this overlap of design and film.

The tenth annual ByDesign program features a range of film title sequences, animations, documentary portraits and guest presenters. We are especially pleased to present films by Charles and Ray Eames, as the work of the legendary multi-disciplinary husband and wife team was the main inspiration for our starting this program a decade ago.
